A warm welcome …

This is the official website of Gilcrux Parish Council, incorporating Bullgill, Gilcrux and Greengill. We hope this site will be useful to all parishioners and visitors to the parish.

Today, there are thousands of Parish Councils in, what are known in England as ‘Civil Parishes,’ throughout the United Kingdom. Parish Councils work on behalf of their local communities and their responsibilities are summarised here: Powers and Duties of Parish Councils.

Historically …

Parish life has deep roots.  Parishes  like Gilcrux have long been shaped by local traditions, landowners and the church, providing a place where community decisions were made and everyday life was organised. But the parish councils we recognise today were created by the Local Government Act of 1894, championed by Prime Minister W. E. Gladstone, introducing elected councils to represent communities more openly and fairly.

Our parish has its own online community archive, and while the site is still in its infancy you will find plenty of information on there about the history of Gilcrux and surrounding areas, including censuses you can download and factual stories about the people who lived in our parish long ago. gilcruxarchive.co.uk
